HISTORIC URBAN CENTERS. CONSTRUCTION CHARACTERS AND SEISMIC VULNERABILITY

2018

The urban rent in the multicultural city: retail shops, migrants and urban decline in the historic centre of Palermo

2020

2020

Changes in consumer shopping behavior and in retail spaces, such as shopping malls, department stores and e-commerce, have modified localization models of traditional retail shops, also affecting urban fabric and spatial distribution of urban rent. Even city centers have undergone significant transformations or even decline, especially if local economic system and real estate market are weak and recessionary. A significant amount of commercial properties may have long vacancy due to excess supply, since many traditional shops close their business because they are no longer competitive and, moreover, there is no immediate takeover by new tenants. The decline of central urban areas depends on…

New Inhabitants for the Re-use of Historical Territories in South-Eastern Sicily

2021

In spite of the multifaceted criticalities that characterise the Sicilian territory, South-Eastern Sicily appears to be of particular interest due to the active role that distinguishes it from the rest of the Island. The transformation processes taking place in South-Eastern Sicily, in fact, seem to be guided by new perspectives of sustainability, local development and good governance. The mix obtained from the extraordinary amount of tangible and intangible resources, from some favourable socio-cultural circumstances and from the creation of new transportation infrastructures, has contributed to promoting new forms of reuse of the historical building heritage by Italian and overseas invest…

2016

This paper aims at scrutinizing the evolution of the retail sector and, consequently, of retailscapes in a Southern Italy city, Catania. Starting from the outputs of an empirical place-based research project carried out by the authors in the mid ’2000s, the work deepens the recent transformations occurred both in the central areas and in the suburbs, in order to explore the processes and dynamics – produced by and within the retail field – which have been shaping urban morphology and socio-economic functions in the last decade.

2021

This paper describes the INTERREG Italy-Malta 1/16 project, of which the Department of Architecture was the beneficiary. The proposal, in the disciplinary field of restoration, aims to create action-learning to be applied in the historic quarters of Palermo and Valletta by implementing an integrated, totally, interdisciplinary working method; it embraces the degree of physical accessibility (with the design of architectural interventions and the provision of technological-IT assistance tools for a smoother passage), and a cultural one, which is expressed via the 'networking' of virtual communication for areas that cannot be easily reached and in parallel educational action that works on ove…

Energy redevelopment of historical centres in the pursuance of the cost-effectiveness principle

2016

In historical centres the search for architectural and plant design solutions for the achievement of higher energy and environmental performances of buildings has to reconcile the preservation of the peculiarities of the building stock on the one hand and the economic efficiency of the interventions on the other one. The cost-effectiveness principle, which is adopted by European policies for the improvement of energy performances of the building stock, may be satisfied through the use of specific macro and micro-economic valuation models.
